UK Boxing Titles

How the title ladder works, and who holds every British, English, Celtic and Area title right now. These are the belts most small hall fighters are chasing.

The title ladder

Step 1Area titles
The first title most British fighters win, usually on a small hall show against a fighter from the same region. The BBBofC runs seven: Central, Midlands, Northern, Southern, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland.
Step 2English and Celtic titles
The national step below the British title. The Celtic title is the equivalent for fighters from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Step 3The British title
The Lonsdale Belt, the oldest title in British boxing. A fighter who wins three British title fights at the same weight keeps the belt outright.
Step 4Commonwealth and European titles
The Commonwealth title (run by the Commonwealth Boxing Council) and the European title (run by the EBU). Both usually lead to a world ranking.
Step 5World titles
The WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO each have a world champion at every weight. Hold all four and you are undisputed.
What about all the other belts? You will often see belts like the WBC International, WBO Inter-Continental, IBF European or WBA Continental, plus "silver" and "interim" titles, and the IBO. They are not world titles. Most are ranking belts: winning one moves a fighter up that organisation's rankings, towards a world title shot.
